We believe in the power of creativity to heal. We help individuals with justice involvement rebuild their lives through theatrical rites of passage and artistic expression.
Re-Entry Theater of Harlem's mission is to empower and support people in safe and creative spaces as they make the difficult transition from prison back to society and become positive contributors to their families and communities.
Since its founding, Re-Entry Theater of Harlem has been pioneering the use of theatrical rites of passage to support successful reintegration...
Join us for our next theatrical performance featuring RTH participants as they enact their threshold crossings and celebrate their journeys...
When participants first walk through RTH's doors, they begin a transformative journey of self-discovery and healing through art...
We employ a "one-stop-shop" model of service provision, offering in-house services to over 8,000 individuals with justice involvement and advocate for alternatives to incarceration.
You can help promote successful reentry from incarceration and promote a fair, humane, and truly rehabilitative justice system.
RTH is designed to develop leadership among the people who are most impacted by mass incarceration in ways that allow the model to multiply and scale.
Our vision is to foster a world where those who are incarcerated or formerly incarcerated will thrive as positive, contributing members of society through the transformative power of art and theater.
RTH is an arts-based program designed by returning citizens to help people heal from the trauma of incarceration. Guided by teaching artists, peer facilitators and social workers, participants support each other in learning to tell their stories in many ways. RTH culminates in a public threshold crossing that is transformative and healing for individuals, families and for the wider community.
Through powerful theatrical performances and storytelling, participants share their journeys of transformation and healing. Our public threshold crossings create spaces for community connection and understanding.
An intensive course in which RTH graduates – alongside a teaching artist and a social worker – learn the theory, practice, and ethics of leading RTH for others coming home from jail or prison.
After Peer Facilitator Training, teams comprised of a facilitator, teaching artist, and a social worker receive support to facilitate RTH in other communities impacted by mass incarceration. Graduates of these programs are then eligible to apply for peer facilitator training... one training at a time, RTH scales up to meet the scope of the crisis.
With art and cultural practice at the heart of our theory of change, RTH graduates lead ongoing community gatherings, bringing people together to celebrate, educate, and organize for the end of mass incarceration.
